Volcanoes in profile – Argentina

Short descriptions of the country's best-known volcanoes.

Ojos del Salado, Nevados

Stratovolcano · 6,879 m · Last eruption: 750

Nevado Ojos del Salado is a dormant complex volcano in the Andes on the Argentina–Chile border. It is the highest volcano on Earth and the highest peak in Chile. The upper reaches of Ojos del Salado consist of several overlapping lava domes, lava flows and volcanic craters, with sparse ice cover. The complex extends over an area of 70–160 square kilometres (27–62 mi2) and its highest summit reaches an altitude of 6,893 metres (22,615 ft) above sea level. Numerous other volcanoes rise around Ojos del Salado.

Llullaillaco

Stratovolcano · 6,739 m · Last eruption: 1877

Llullaillaco is a dormant stratovolcano on the border between Argentina and Chile. It is part of the Llullaillaco National Park and lies in the Puna de Atacama, a region of tall volcanic peaks on a high plateau close to the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places in the world. Its maximum elevation is most commonly given as 6,723 metres (22,057 ft), making it the second-highest active volcano in the world. Despite its height, it is not clear whether the volcano has any glaciers or merely patches of perennial snow and ice. Between 3,700 m and 5,000 m elevation there is a sparse plant cover, while at lower altitudes the climate is too dry for plants to grow. A species of mouse on Llullaillaco is the vertebrate species living at the highest-known altitude.

Tipas

Volcanic complex · 6,658 m · Last eruption: Not available

Incahuasi, Nevado de

Stratovolcano · 6,638 m · Last eruption: Not available

Incahuasi is a volcanic mountain in the Andes of South America. It lies on the border of the Catamarca Province of Argentina and the Atacama Region of Chile. Incahuasi has a summit elevation of 6,621 metres (21,722 ft) above sea level.

Solo, El

Stratovolcano · 6,205 m · Last eruption: Not available

Cerro Solo is a large stratovolcano on the border between Argentina and Chile, west of Ojos del Salado with an elevation of 6,215 metres (20,390 ft) metres. It consists of nine eruptive centers and is covered in light-colored rhyodacite pyroclastic flow deposits.

Frequently asked questions about volcanoes in Argentina

How many volcanoes are there in Argentina?
The Holocene catalogue of the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program lists 32 volcanoes in Argentina. It covers volcanoes with eruptions during the last roughly 12,000 years.
Which volcano in Argentina is the highest?
The highest recorded volcano is Ojos del Salado, Nevados at 6,879 m.
When was the last documented eruption in Argentina?
The most recent eruption documented in the catalogue dates from 2024 (Copahue).
Are the volcanoes in Argentina active?
None of the 32 volcanoes currently has an eruption report. That does not mean they are extinct – source coverage differs from volcano to volcano.
Why does the map show aircraft around volcanoes?
Volcanic ash endangers aircraft engines. The map therefore shows live positions within 50 km of a volcano so that the proximity of air traffic to an active volcano becomes visible.
Where does the data on this page come from?
Catalogue data and eruption history from the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program, significant eruptions from NOAA NCEI, alert levels and bulletins from USGS, GeoNet and INGV, earthquakes from the QuakeMap24 database, flight positions from ADSB.lol.
