How to read the heatmap
Density reveals clusters
Every recorded earthquake has equal weight. Warm colours appear where several earthquakes overlap in the map view. A larger coloured area does not necessarily mean a stronger individual earthquake.
Magnitude highlights stronger earthquakes
Larger magnitudes receive more weight in this view. Weights are scaled to the strongest earthquake in the selection. This is a visual weighting, not a measurement of released energy or local shaking.
Context and limitations
Colours depend on zoom, time window, filters and monitoring coverage. Small earthquakes are not recorded equally completely everywhere. The heatmap shows recorded events, not a hazard level or a forecast. At most 5,000 latest earthquakes in the selected time window are shown.
